Gran Fondo Worlds, Niseko JAPAN

Getting There:

Where are the UCI Gran Fondo Worlds being held?

The 2026 event will be held on Hokkaido, the North Island of Japan, in the area of Hirafu, Niseko. The area is known for incredible skiing in the winter months, and fantastic hiking, cycling and exploring in the green season.

How do I get there?

The New Chitose Airport (near Sapporo) is the main airport servicing this region. Flight connections are available primarily via Tokyo, or via Hong Kong. The airport is located approximately 2 hours from the event site and group hotels. Private and group transfers (including for bikes), and hire cars are available from the airport. Flights and transport can be booked as part of your travel package. Arriving by train is possible however the connections are limited and travelling on trains with a bike is very challenging.

The Local Area:

For those staying at the group hotels, a complimentary shuttle service will link the two hotels, the event hub and the nearest main town, Kutchan. The Always Niseko hotel is also within walking distance (2km) of the event hub. Niseko Style is 10km from the event hub so riding or using the shuttle is the best way to get there. Taxis are also available in the area.

What is there to do in the area aside from the event?

This area of Niseko is home to fantastic outdoor activities such as cycling, mountain biking, hiking and golf. There are also alpine gondolas, adventure parks, onsens, local museums and more.

Are there any day trip experiences available for supporters and those looking for a day off the bike?

Yes. We are currently working on some optional day tours that will take in the best of the local region, food experiences, and activities, as well as guided visits to the beautiful coastal town of Otaru. Further details will be shared as soon as they are available.

Will there be group rides during event week that I can join?

Guests are welcome to explore the local area and there will no doubt be a host of groups heading out. The event is also organising some regional discovery rides. Details will be updated once released.

How can I recon the course?

Competitors will have the option to join a coach tour of the full course on the afternoon of 27 August. Registrations will be open closer to the event and details will be shared as soon as they are available.

Participation:

Where do I find more information on qualifying, registration and race routes?

Qualification is via a UCI Gran Fondo event such as the Tour de Brisbane. Please visit https://nisekoclassic.com/en/race/race-regulations for the latest information on qualification, registration, race timings and routes.

Can I participate/attend even if I haven't qualified?

Yes, packages are available for qualified competitors, supporters and those that wish to be part of the atmosphere. The event will also have ride options for non-competitors.

Do I have to be Australian to book a package with Higher Ground?

No. Whilst there will no doubt be an Australian vibe to the group hotels, guests from around the world are welcome to join.

Hotels:

What dining is available at the group hotels?

Both hotels include breakfast daily, and offer on-site restaurants and nearby restaurants. The Team-AUS package also includes two team dinners, including a pre-race carb-loading dinner.

Can I get an early breakfast on race day?

Yes, both hotels will provide breakfast on 30 August from 4am.

Where do I store my bike during event week?

Both hotels have been selected as they have bike storage rooms as well as the option to store your bike in your room. Please note, bike storage is at your own risk. The hotels and Higher Ground Travel & Events have no liability for any damage or theft. Please ensure you have appropriate insurance and take precautions with your items.

Can I extend my stay?

Yes. We can request additional night(s) pre-or post the 5 night stay that is included in the package. Rates will be advised on request and are subject to availability.

What room types are available?

Single, twin/double and limited triple and quadruple share options are available. Please note this is subject to change as availability is limited.

Are laundry facilities available?

Yes, both properties have laundry facilities available on site.

Rider support:

Is there a bike mechanic available?

Yes, an on-site mechanic dedicated to the group will be available at the Always Niseko hotel from 27 to 30 August. Please note the service and basic consumables are complimentary however is limited to their scope of what can be fixed, and competitors are recommended to bring their own spare parts. Rhythm Niseko bike shop located near the event hub will also be providing mechanic support and it is expected that the event will have some mechanic support available on race day.

Is there a massage therapist available?

Yes, Niseko Chriropractic will provide dedicated sports massage therapists for the group at the Always Niseko hotel from 27-29 August. A booking portal will be shared prior to event week and sessions are payable directly to the provider.

Travel in Japan:

I would like to experience Japan pre/post the event, what are the options?

Higher Ground is offering a 4-night Tokyo experience pre-event and a 6-night Hokkaido tour post-event. Please follow the below links for further details. As we are a licensed travel agency, we can also organise other custom built travel itineraries and book tours and experiences to meet your interests.
