Cycling Through Girona: A Bucket List Experience

Our top tips:

Where to stay: Hotel Nord 1901

Where to eat: El Balcó & Can Xifra

Where for coffee: La Comuna

Not to miss (for cyclists): Hors Categorie Girona

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Spain, Girona is a captivating blend of history, culture, and stunning landscapes. Known for its medieval architecture and vibrant atmosphere, it is rapidly becoming one of Europe’s premier cycling destinations. Whether you're an avid cyclist or just looking to explore, Girona has something to offer everyone. Having just hosted a private multi-day cycling tour in Girona, here are some of our tips and experiences.

Getting There

Reaching Girona is easy, with direct trains from Barcelona taking around 40 minutes. Driving is tempting, but be aware that traffic can quickly add an extra hour or more to your journey.

The city itself is compact and bike-friendly, making it simple to navigate on two wheels or by foot. Upon arrival, the charm of the old town beckons with its cobbled streets and the iconic Eiffel Bridge.

Exploring the Old Town

Before you hit the trails, take some time to wander the ancient streets of Girona. Don’t miss the stunning Cathedral of Santa Maria, which boasts the widest Gothic nave in the world. The Jewish Quarter, or El Call, is another must-see, with its narrow alleys and historical significance. You'll no doubt recognise parts

of the old town as it featured heavily in Game of Thrones.

Be sure to stop by one of the local cafés for a taste of "xuixo," a delicious pastry filled with cream.

Cycling in the Region

Girona and it's surrounds offers a vast array of riding options, from mountain biking to gravel and road and has some of the most courteous drivers we've ever encountered. Here we'll focus on road cycling as it is the most popular for visitors to the region.

Scenic Routes

The 'Hincapie Loop' is named after former American pro-cyclist George Hincapie who lived in the region and regularly used this ride in training. The 64km loop from Girona takes in two climbs, including Els Angels and its views to the Mediterranean.

Head further South East after Els Angels and you can ride all the way to the Costa Brava and then follow the stunning coast road as it winds its way along the cliff face.

To the North West of Girona is the infamous Rocacorba climb. With steep sections of 16% it is not for the faint of heart. The views from the top are well worth it though, as are the lush farmland that you'll meander through to reach there.

To the North East is the Torroella de Montgri loop. The 85km is light on for climbing and includes stunning country lanes and historic villages, plus some great little bakeries and cafes to break up the ride.

This is just a taste of what is on offer from your hotel door. There are countless more, plus a short drive opens up even more options.

Practical Tips

  • Bike Rentals: Numerous shops in Girona offer bike rentals, ensuring you have the right gear for your adventure. Many even provide options for guided tours. The best thing about renting a bike in Girona is the range of high end brands to choose from, so you can try a bike that you have dreamed about riding.

  • Weather: Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures perfect for cycling. Summer can be hot, so plan your rides for early mornings or late afternoons.

  • Local Cuisine: Don’t forget to fuel up! Try traditional dishes like escalivada (roasted vegetables) and canelons (pasta filled with meat).

Girona is more than just a cycling hub; it's a city steeped in history and culture, offering a unique blend of exploration and adventure. Whether you’re navigating its historic streets or pedaling through the stunning Catalonian countryside, Girona is sure to leave you enchanted.
