Whether you're an avid hiker, a history enthusiast, or simply someone looking to unwind in a beautiful setting, Mittenwald and the surrounding Bavarian Alps offer a wealth of experiences. Here’s why this alpine gem should be on your travel itinerary.
1. Charming Alpine Village
Mittenwald, with its colourful houses and quaint streets, embodies the essence of a traditional Bavarian village. The town is renowned for its beautifully painted facades, known as Lüftlmalerei, which depict scenes from local folklore and history. Stroll through the charming streets and discover the intricate artwork that adorns many of the buildings.
The Mittenwald Historical Museum offers a glimpse into the town’s rich history, showcasing its traditions, crafts, and the famous violin-making heritage that has been a part of the local culture for centuries.

2. Scenic Outdoor Adventures
The Bavarian Alps provide an exceptional backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. Mittenwald is surrounded by a variety of natural wonders and offers numerous activities for all seasons:
Hiking: Mittenwald is the perfect starting point for exploring the stunning alpine landscapes. Trails range from gentle walks to challenging hikes. The Karwendel Nature Park, just outside of town, offers a network of trails with breathtaking views of rugged peaks, lush meadows, and serene alpine lakes. The Lautersee and Kramerplateauweg are popular trails that provide picturesque scenery and rewarding vistas.
Cycling: The region is also a paradise for cyclists. The Isar Cycle Path follows the river through beautiful landscapes, while mountain biking enthusiasts can tackle the challenging trails in the surrounding hills.
Winter Sports: In the winter, Mittenwald transforms into a snowy wonderland. The local ski area, part of the Kreuzeck-Elmau ski region, offers a range of slopes for all skill levels. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular, with trails winding through the pristine winter landscape.

3. Gorgeous Alpine Scenery
The Bavarian Alps are renowned for their dramatic landscapes, and Mittenwald offers some of the most stunning views. Take a ride on the Karwendel Cable Car to reach the summit of the Karwendel range, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Alps and beyond. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of the distant Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak.
The Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm), a short drive from Mittenwald, is a must-visit natural wonder. The gorge features dramatic rock formations and rushing waters that create a mesmerizing display of nature’s power and beauty.
4. Traditional Bavarian Cuisine
After a day of exploring, indulge in the local cuisine. Mittenwald’s restaurants and taverns serve up hearty Bavarian fare. Enjoy traditional dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, Bavarian Pretzels, and Speckknödel (bacon dumplings). Pair your meal with a glass of local beer or a fine Bavarian wine to complete your dining experience. Salad and vegetables are often an afterthought though so you may want to seek these out from time to time!
The town also hosts a variety of festivals and markets throughout the year, where you can sample local delicacies, shop for handmade crafts, and immerse yourself in the lively local culture.
5. Cultural Experiences
Mittenwald is not just about natural beauty; it also offers rich cultural experiences. The town’s St. Peter and Paul Church is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, featuring intricate frescoes and a stunning altar.
If you’re visiting during the summer, check out the Mittenwald Music Festival, which celebrates the town’s musical heritage with performances ranging from classical concerts to folk music.
