San Sebastián, or Donostia in Basque, is a captivating coastal city nestled in the Basque Country of Spain. Renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant culinary scene, and rich cultural heritage, San Sebastián is a destination that offers something for every type of traveller, as is fantastic for families. We've hosted a number of groups in San Sebastian and also chose it for a 2 week family holiday of our own. Here’s a guide to making the most of your visit to this picturesque city.

1. Bask in the Beauty of La Concha Beach

No visit to San Sebastián is complete without experiencing La Concha Beach. This crescent-shaped bay, often ranked among Europe’s most beautiful beaches, offers a perfect blend of golden sands and turquoise waters. Whether you’re sunbathing, taking a dip, or simply strolling along the picturesque promenade, La Concha provides a serene setting with stunning views.

For a unique perspective, head up to Monte Igueldo. The funicular railway takes you to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the bay and the city. It’s also a great spot for sunset photography. There is a fun fair at the top where you can take mini-boat rides and roller coasters whilst overlooking the city and sea.

2. Savour Pintxos in the Old Town

San Sebastián is synonymous with pintxos—Basque-style tapas that are as diverse as they are delicious. Head to the Parte Vieja (Old Town) to immerse yourself in this culinary tradition. Pintxos bars are scattered throughout, each offering a variety of small dishes that cater to all tastes.

Try classic combinations like tortilla española (Spanish omelet) or jamón ibérico (Iberian ham). For a more adventurous palate, sample creative concoctions such as foie gras with apple compote or grilled octopus. The key is to hop from bar to bar, sampling a bit from each place to experience the full range of flavours.

Our favourite Pintxo bar is Atari, located opposite the Donostiako Elizbarruti Museoa.

3. Discover Basque Culture at the Museo de San Telmo

For a deeper understanding of Basque culture and history, visit the Museo de San Telmo. Located in a former Dominican convent, the museum offers a comprehensive look at Basque life through the ages. Exhibits range from prehistoric artefacts to contemporary art, providing a well-rounded perspective on the region’s heritage.

The museum’s architecture is as fascinating as its exhibits. The blend of historic and modern design elements reflects the city’s evolving character.

Another nearby gem is the coastal town of Zumaia, famous for its dramatic cliffs and geological formations. The Flysch rock formations along the coastline are a must-see for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers.

San Sebastián is a city that loves to celebrate. If your visit coincides with one of its many festivals, you’re in for a treat. The San Sebastián Day (Día de San Sebastián) on January 20th is a particularly lively event, featuring colourful parades and traditional drumming. The Semana Grande in August also brings street performances, concerts, and fireworks.

Travel Tips

Language: While Spanish is widely spoken, learning a few basic phrases in Basque (Euskara) can be appreciated by the locals. Start learning here.

Weather: The city enjoys a temperate climate. Summers are pleasant, and winters are mild but can be rainy. Pack accordingly and check the weather forecast before your trip.

Getting Around: San Sebastián is compact and walkable. For longer distances, consider renting a bike or using public transportation. Bilbao is best reached by coach service, Pamplona by train, or smaller areas by renting a car.
